This is the third in the series. Water, fire and air are the basic requirements of life. This has been mentioned in our Hindu scriptures – jal, agni and vayu. I have already touched upon the first two; it is now the turn of air to come to the dissecting table.

We breathe in air; it contains oxygen which is so necessary for life. We exhale carbon dioxide which does not go waste but is absorbed by the plants around us and, by virtue of photo synthesis, they discharge oxygen into the atmosphere. Obviously, it is a never ending process and a continuous cycle that determines the health of all the living beings on this planet. Plants are an integral part of our existence. But, the rapid urbanization around us and the resultant loss of the green cover are pointers to the un-natural behaviors of the elements of nature. Large open spaces that are so important to maintain the balance of Nature are taken over by huge concrete skyscrapers and, coupled with increase in the number of petrol and diesel vehicles that ply on the roads, have adverse effects on the environment. The exhaust fumes pollute the atmosphere and create problems for all the inhabitants. Some of these problems are visible, others take their toll un-noticed. They are the silent killers. Nature takes her revenge in the form of excessive heat during summer, and delayed or inadequate monsoons during the rains. These throw our life completely out of gear.

To counter the adverse effects, people are trying their level best to discover solutions. Jogging parks welcome early morning walkers to breathe in fresh oxygen, pollution checks on vehicles have been made mandatory, tree planting drives are held at regular intervals but, the damage already done is so immense that the result of corrective action that has been initiated can be felt probably in the next century. Till then, we have to survive in the hell that we have created for ourselves and continue to breathe polluted air knowing that our days are numbered.

CNG has totally changed Delhi. It is the only city where all public transports work on CNG & diesel is banned. Before this the air was almost unbreathable & the smogs in winter stayed on for days. Driving was simply tailing the tail light of the car in front.

What is CNG? Sounds good, whatever it is.

Dear Friend,
It is Compressed Natural Gas. Very green fuel... very much non polluting.

Totally agree Jyoti, Delhi is a 100% better on the lungs since the introduction of CNG, now if they could only get the generators to work on the same fuel!! During power outages, these things bring tears to my eyes on Paharganj!!

CH,
Yes in crowded commercial places the DG sets are a menace. Altho some regulations are there but you know the scene..... this time two generating stations have crashed causing a terrible shortage of power.
