I am planning a trip to India sometime in '08, with friends who've never been to India; I was hoping to visit both Shimla and Rajasthan during this trip. When might be a good moment, when one might not be too hot and the other not too cold? Travel during late October and/or early November would seem to be the idea, but the books have different temperature ranges listed. What would Shimla be like in the first week of November? Or, say, Jaipur in the last week of October?

Thanks,
Bruce

Shimla will be cold but not freezing. End October in Jaipur is ok... cool in the evenings & pleasant in the shade during day. In general this time is good for travel in India

End of October in Rajasthan is very pleasant.
Pushkar Mela culminates in the first week in November this year if you are in the area,,,,,,,,,,,,

If you are not going to Rohtang pass and beyond then March is also OK. Third week of October in Shimla and around followed by Rajastan in the first week of November will be OK. I have gone to Himachal 7 times once during 1st week of November to Rohtang pass. It was pleasant.

I'd give Shimla a miss altogether if I were you, mate.

I'm in Shimla at the moment and it's the tackiest and most boring place I've visited in India.

May I recommend my blog to the good doctor? Tonnes of lovely spots close to Shimla... October's a good time to go, provided you don't plan to go further north.
Pleased by life's gauds, pained by its pinpricks and stings,
Swayed by ignoble hopes, ignoble fears;
Threading life's tangled maze without life's clue,
Busy with means, yet heedless of their ends....

That's a nice little site, SoulCurry. Good photography.

But Shimla still just reminds me of Tunbridge Wells! :)

Different strokes and all that ...

That's exactly why I want to go there; a bit of Victorian England in an unlikely location! I'm a student of history, and Shimla was (as you all know) the summer capital of the Raj. Plus a few days of mountain air, hiking over hillsides, drinking tea etc. sounds good to me. Plus other stuff I know nothing about which will no doubt be discovered! I plan to "go rambling without purpose" (nice site, SoulCurry)...

Cheers,
Bruce

Thanks to all of you for the replies here, and I'm extremely excited to say that I'm going to India this ('07) Sept./Oct for a visit (Delhi, Dharamsala, Rishikesh, Varanasi) in addition to my still-planned visit to Delhi/Rajasthan/Agra next year ('08). Plus, my sister and brother want to do a N. India trip in '09! (A bit of family nostalgia; our family lived in Lahore in the early 1960's.)

So, things are looking up.

Cheers,
Bruce
