Where should you look to stay while travelling in India? I realise this is an extremely open-ended question, but we are two girls from Dubai travelling, used to clean and hygenic surroundings on a budget.
Where should we ideally look for? What are hostels like? Or should we go for 3 star hotels?
What should we expect?
Any thoughts?

Well I guess it all depends on what your Idea of Clean and hygienic is.
The majority of place that I have stayed recommended by the LP and various website have on the whole usually been basic but clean. I would suggest picking up a copy have a read through to see if there are any you like the sound of then ask on here for travellers experiences. Have a shortlist of one or two for each town. When you check in ask to see the room first, if not move on to No 2.
Whilst the decor / furniture is not the prettiest I have see there are clean Sheets, clean toilet, Running Water or Buckets of hot water and on the whole OK. However you will get the odd cobweb, splatted mosquito etc on the wall. But most are a pretty decent for RSs500 - 1000 per night.
Personally I often find staying in the 3 star hotels pretty mediocre and often begrudge paying the Rs2 - 3k when the quality if often no better than the cheapies!.
If its fluffy carpets, fluffy towels, complimentary biscuits and toiletries you want then there is always a Taj Hotel in most towns but then that may blow your Budget!

You can stay safely at State Govt. tourism development corporation hotels at moderately reasonble tariff. For example Himanchal tourism provides very good accommodation. If you furnish your itinerary correctly we can suggest some hotels.

Thanks SB,
Not looking for the five-star scene, but cant handle the cockroah one either. Just looking for a clean bed and running water so I think LP is the way to go.
Where have you gone in India? any places that I just shouldnt miss?
take care,
Nisha

Like strawberry Blonde says a budget of 500 to 700 will find you a clean hotel every time!! If you want to save a little money, even some places for 250-300 can be clean and safe!!
A good strategy is to pick a few hopefuls out of the guide book and have the taxi wait, until you've checked out the standard of room!!
As a first time visitor I would be looking at the Taj Mahal of course, maybe a wildlife park say Ranthambore in Rajasthan or Bharatpur which also in Rajasthan!!
From here make a choice, Rajasthan with it's painted towns, looming forts and desert scenery
Or Madhya Pradesh with some truly stunning lonely mountains and intricate temples.
You'll find some suggestions below one thing to bear in mind, actually travelling in India can take it out of you! It all looks small on a guidebook map but distances are large and transport slow!! So bear that in mind when planning your trip. pick a small area and explore it properly, with maybe a couple of satellite trips to things of interest!!
Anyway starting off in Agra and with a trip to Ranthambore or Bharatpur (another option is basing yourself in Agra and covering the Taj and the Ancient city of Fetahpur Sikri on a day trip)
You could take a less travelled route though Rajasthan Say Bundi-Chittor-Udaipur-Mount Abu-Ranakpur- khumblegargh-Jaipur/Jaiselmer-Delhi
As a sattelite trip you could see the Golden temple at Amritsar
Or in Madhya Pradesh you could do Gwalior-Orchha-Indore-Mandu-Maheshwar-Pachmari-Delhi
As a sattelite trip you could do this trip in reverse and tack on a trip to Varanasi!
Go out and get yourself a guide book Rough Guide/Footprint/Lonely planet will all suffice, read up on a few of these destinations and see what you think. There's decent accommodation in all off these places try googling for images, to get a feel for you proposed destination!!
Photos!
Alternatively you can take a look at my photo site which has photos of some of these destinations!!
