These are the claws & legs of the jumbo prawns. There is soft flesh inside these & very tasty.

No. They are jumbo prawns from south-east coast. We don't have crayfish here. The last I ate crayfish was in San Sebastian, northern Spain.

I don't think they are crayfish as Crayfish are not found in India. I think these are Jumbo king prawns (Golda-Chingri). Is that right Jyoti da?

Oops! Too much happened since I started typing  ;)

Delhi has become a big market for both fresh water & seafish. Markets here are now full of all types of fish transported as well as flown in from all parts of India and Hilsa fish from Bangladesh.

Yes Neeleem they are Golda Chingri

Frozen fish come all the way from India and Bangladesh to the UK. So Delhi should be easy. The Billingsgate market in London (largest wholesale fish market in the UK) sells fish from all over the world early in the morning everyday. I once bought about 8KG fresh tiger prawns in straight from India. They weren't frozen. They were brought fresh in crates filled with crushed ice. Quality was A1.  ;)

Also I remember as a child, I used to see big sacks of Rohu, Katla and Pabda fish being sent by train from Mettupalayam to Howrah (for Bengalis obviously  ;) ) to be sold in fish markets in Kolkata. These were caught in the Bhawanisagar in Mettupalayam.

Billingsgate is fantastic. Only bad news is it opens at 5 am and I am a 5 hr drive away. So to get there I would have to finish work on friday then leave home at 1 am in the morning to get there.  ;)

It hardly lunchtime for me (quarter to 12) and this discussion is making me salivate. I suspect it will be fish/ prawns for dinner tonight  ;) .

;)  ;)  Well I was visiting a friend in SE London and as it is not easy for me to visit that market too often. So I acted fast and emptied my pockets! Had to take the precautions of putting lots of ice in the packaging to ensure they stay well during the drive back. They safely made it to my freezer and gave us lots of delicious prawn dinners!  ;)

I told you before that my tongue seldom rests!

Quick Fish Meal Bengali Style

This is not really a recipe, so instead of putting it as a seperate recipe I will just add it to Jyoti Da's Prawn Malai Curry post.

Take any fresh fish or prawns. Rub a bit of salt and turmeric on the fish/ prawns and marinate for 10 mins. Fry them in oil (preferably mustard oil for the authentic Bengali flavour) for a few mins (time depending on type/thickness if fish piece). Put two teaspoons of the oil used for frying on a plate of hot rice, break and rub a green chilli in, put some salt and mix the rice up with the mashed chilli and salt. This rice will make a lovely meal with the fried fish. This will work with any fresh fish or prawns.

Yes I second that, Swagath is definitely a place to go for this crab dish, they use soft shell crabs. Another must not miss place is Ploof in Lodhi colony.
Yes some day Shilpa for sure. We had been talking about a meet up & cooking dinner for a long time but it hasn't yet happened. With winter setting in a picnic can be planed.
