The new edition of Byomkesh Bakshi mysteries? Off to CrossWord this evening  :huh:
Pleased by life's gauds, pained by its pinpricks and stings,
Swayed by ignoble hopes, ignoble fears;
Threading life's tangled maze without life's clue,
Busy with means, yet heedless of their ends....

Let's compare notes on this, what say, Jyoti?

Heh-heh! you scored 3 out of 4, P.D.  :huh: Not a Bong, but definitely a Bong-phile (Help! Did I just coin a phrase?!)

(It's my ambition to be able to read Saradindu in Bangla someday.)

Very well known novelist Sri Saradindu started writing these detective stories in Bengali. A very interesting & unique way of story telling. His detective's name is Byomkesh Bakshi... Satyanneshi(The searcher of truth)

Ah! and my "quick and dirty" web search reveals that the books are published by Penguin India, that 30 years ago (!) Satyajit Ray made a film based on them, and that there have also been some TV productions.  Looks like I'll be sending off for some mail-order books from India soon!

Bengali crime fiction has ranged from the fecund to the erudite.
On the one hand, you have the prolific but execrable writing of Hemendra Kumar Roy: Bengali readers might remember the gluttonous Sundar-babu & his "hoom"! (Crime-writing aficionados have told me that he was a huge plagiarist, but I have personally not read enough of him to condemn him!!) On the other, you have Sharadindu Bandopadhyay's almost scholarly works featuring Byomkesh Bakshi & his lieutenant Ajit.
And it is impossible to discuss crime fiction written in Bangla without mentioning Satyajit Ray's memorable character Felu-Da. Ray wrote 30-odd stories featuring Pradosh Mitter, his cousin Tapesh (Topshe) and Lalmohan Babu (a bumbling fellow who writes appalling crime stories under the alias "Jatayu").
Both Saradindu & Ray's stories have been translated into English. Thank god.

p.s. Forgot to add that I'm proud owner of two volumes containing the complete exploits of Feluda. Gopa Mazumdar & Chitrita Banerjee have translated the stories from the original in Bengali.
Penguin is also the publishing house which has brought out Byomkesh Bakshi.
