The first rule is never pay the BT price for phoning India!

For a ten minute call to an Indian landline BT will charge you £2.50, but you can make the same call for 40p by using a dial-through provider.

You do not need to sign up for anything with a dial through provider – all you do is call an access number, and it is the call to the access number that is charged to your telephone bill.

The access numbers are all in the UK and are priced at the time of writing cost from 4p a minute.

Calls to mobile phones in India start at 5p a minute, so if you also buy an Indian sim card when you're in India, friends and family can keep in touch for pennies! :)
