Yesterday Basant(spring) ustav was celebrated at the Dargah of Baba Nizamuddin. People dressed up in yellow clothes and wore/carried yellow marigold flowers and turned up for Sufi music. A walk was organised from Lodhi gardens to the Dargah where all intellectuals of Delhi participated. The only Hindu festival celebrated at the Dargah.
It is said that Baba Nizamuddin went in to deep depression after his nephew's death and never left his nephews grave. On Basant Panchami day poet Aamir Khusru arrived with a group of people wearing garlands of marigold, singing Sufi songs. This brought back smiles to Baba's face.
In many parts of India especially in Bengal Basant Panchami is also the day Godess SraswatI(Godess of learning) is worshipped.
