Hi all,

On previous trips to India I have always used trains (which I love) and busses (I hate). For part of a trip in 2 weeks time I am thinking of hiring a driver for four days before hopping on the train. Can anyone recommend a company based in Delhi. I am traveling with my family (6 in total). We are planning to drive into Uttar Pradesh before being dropped off in Agra for the train. Return trip for the driver would be about 600km.

There are hordes of taxi operators who would give you more or less the same rate. We hire non-ac cabs for Rs.5.50/km and Rs.150/- for driver's night halts. Toll taxes are extra.
Always inspect the vehicle and make sure that the driver understands and speaks English. To travel with a driver who doesn't understand you is hell.
I often suggest using the same car and the driver locally for a day before going on long distance travel.
You wrote that you would go to Uttar Pradesh and get dropped off at Agra to take train. Can you let us know the itinerary of your road travel. May be some one comes up with some great idea?

Thanks Jyotirmoy,
The car is now all sorted. Friends living in Gurgaon have found a driver for us. All I need to find out now is somewhere to stay for a couple of nights in the area. Unfortunatly we are too many for them to accommodate. The ownly hotels we can find in the Gurgaon area are well above our budget.

Counting down the days now. Cant wait to leave England and work for a while.

Gurgaon is not a place where tourists go, its a place where people travelling on business go, so no middle class hotels. If you have to stay some where close to Gurgaon I would suggest the hotels near the international airport. You must bargain.

Hi Jyotirmoy,

I thought we were all sorted but things are never that easy. I am again in need of finding a car and driver. Problems with our friends contact and the other sugestion posted is full.

Our plans are to leave our friends in the expensive Gurgaon on the 28th of December for Agra. 29th and 30th Jarar & Bateshwar (have promised on another thread to post photos ect.) leaving on the 31st back to Agra for a morning train to Jhansi. The car can then return to Delhi.

On 'Map my India' this is just under 600km return journey, 3 nights 4 days.

Should I wait until in India or does anyone have another contact. Also more concerned with price than comfort but I will be with my husband and 4 children.
