(Seriously? The last post in this section was 2007?! Well, I certainly won't feel guilty hogging the forum, then!)

As mentioned elsewhere, I have just secured my own flat in Lado Sarai, near JNU campus. I'm anxious to get out of the hostel and into a place of my own as soon as possible, but I'm going to need some furniture. So I am both seeking advice & posting prices of what I've found in order to help others also looking to set up a house.

Note that I am basically on an Indian budget and looking to set up and Indian-style house with a few Western amenities. I'll post what I've found prices for below, as well as what I'm looking for but haven't found yet, so y'all can comment.

The only place I've priced furniture at so far is Munirka. I'd love to know other good places to check, as long as they're close enough to deliver to JNU.

Living Room

Sofa Set: Wooden 7,000 to 9,500 (with 2 matching chairs)
Sofa Set: Bamboo 10,000 ish (with 2 chairs, coffee table, and bamboo "trunk")
Coffee Table 750 - 1500

Bedroom

Metal Armoire (6' by 3 1/2') 6,000
Metal Armoire (5' by 2 1/2 or 3') 3,500 to 4,800
Wooden Armoire ???
Single Bed Frame 1200
Mattress: Super cheap 300 - 1000
Mattress: Good quality ???
Vanity with full mirror 1800 - 3500
(1800 is particle board, 3500 is "real" wood)

Kitchen:

Stove: 2 burner 750 - 1500
Refrigerator ???
Dishes/Pots & Pans ???
Small cabinet (3' tall) 2500

Where do I buy kitchen things? Both appliances (refrigerator, microwave, mixer) and kitchen supplies (pots & pans, etc.)

Where do I find a small table? In Bangalore lots of places sold small tables with metal frames & glass top and 4 chairs (very cute, what you would have in breakfast nook or coffee shop) for about 4500. But I can't find anything like that in Delhi!

Jyoti -- Do they have good prices on things like refrigerators? I've never been to Big Bazaar -- can you imagine!? :) If so, that's easy for appliances! I'll go Saturday.

Gosh, furnishing an apartment in Delhi sounds complicated. In the U.S., it would already come with at least a stove and a fridge! Nothing else, though - so I maybe it's not so different except for having to provide your own major appliances. I think there's a "craigslist" for Delhi and you might be able to pick up some second hand stuff there. I'll check and post back with the info.

I'm back. Here's the Delhi craigslist URL: http://delhi.craigslist.co.in/

One of the current ads is by somebody moving house and selling all kinds of household goods: http://delhi.craigsl...1438746057.html

This is terrible ! Jyotida, we are all in Delhi and can't just seek to help out a new Delhite by merely posting suggestions on a forum. I suggest we escort the "gauri firangi ladki" :) in her shopping endeavours. She shall pay for the drinks afterwards of course..... :)

Better make sure the drinks are after the shopping, especially with these two along as "consultants".

I fully agree with you kabaary bhai, I would have done so had I not have to go to Hyderabad today. But there is always the next week end and ladies don't wrap up shopping in just one week end. Nah??

So true! I am totally up for some company. *grin* I am going to find Big Bazaar today, just to have a peep at what's there, but the place isn't quite ready.

@Kabaary: Great idea. And, of course, I'm up for buying drinks after. What good friend wouldn't make sure you have some water after such a tough day shopping! I might even splurge for cold drinks. ;) :) But, seriously, in the US friends coming to help move usually meant pizza afterward ... I've no issue with combining a treat for my movers and a celebration of the new place!

@dzibead: And in the US the stove comes with a connection of whatever sort! I have to figure out how to buy a gas can, too. :) But, it's really not harder except that at home I have people to give me hand-me-down furniture, garage sales to scout, and know where to get the good deals and how much things should cost. But it's fun -- I have been waiting a long time to have my own place. :)

I looked at yuninet. All the foreigners selling things at the moment are a bit out of my price range, but maybe it's not the right season for good moving sales. Ah, I miss garage sales!

P.S. I have some friends who have offered to sell me two twin size beds cheaply, but they are in Dwarka. How do I get them to this side of delhi?? :)

Get the beds delivered in a three-wheeler! We pay about Rs.1000 for a delivery from Mysore, 100km away, so it shouldn't cost too much.

You can always get a good discount on refrigerators, microwave ovens, etc.

I contacted a few places near here and managed to get our new fridge 20% below MRP!

Even Big Bazaar and More! were happy to give discounts off their advertised prices.

Happy shopping. :)

13 km on a 3 wheeler? For two beds? With mattresses??? Really? :)

I went to Big Bazaar today in vasant kunj-- was a bit disappointed by the choice in appliances & the lack of sales help, but they are very competitive on household goods. I love all the gadgets.

Then I walked across the street to the shops in Masood Pur and found several electrical shops. And, darn it, anyway! None of them hiked up the price or gave me outrageous prices just because I am a foreigner! So I am going to have to choose by who will give me the best discount/service. :) That means, basically, whoever I liked the most.

I’d steer clear of Big Bazar about electrical appliances. Unless I am looking for specific brand and it’s available on shelves. Two summers ago an acquaintance of mine bought 1.5 ton aircon for about 8,500 rs. That made in china tin can did not last even a single summer. But I think its ok place for kitchen knick knacks.

Moving those beds from dwarka to around JNU, I’d recommend that you hire a commercial goods carrying rickshaw wallah to haul, for about 200 to 300 max. If its an open body auto rickshaw, you can find them at nearest commercial hub or corner shops. They will charge about 400 to 500 rs but holding them beds within the trawler I am not sure about. If you are unable to find either one to do the job, let me know, I deal with them often, so I’ll send over someone.

For appliances look around for discount shops in area, usually they stock white goods having very small dents inflicted during transportation from factory to distributors. I saw a shop in Karol Bagh selling an LG 170 ltr fridge for 6,200 rs that retails at 8,200 rs on other outlets and so on.

I came to about the same conclusion for Big Bazaar. Though I'm totally ready to raid the shelves for fun knick knacks as soon as I have a stove and fridge!

Thanks for the tip about the rickshaw wallah. We've decided to hold off on the beds until I measure the apartment, but i have several trunks that will certainly need to be moved. That makes a lot more sense than trying to hire a taxi or hiring a whole moving company for 4 things!

I definitely need to check out Karol Bagh soon. I found some decently priced stuff in Masood Pur. I think I am just going to buy from there & bargain them down a bit, but worry about deeper discounts when I'm not in such a hurry & not in the middle of end of semester. :)

Jyoti

John meant, put 3 wheels on the bottom of the mattress and let it roll - OK, add a 4th one just for stability :balloon: If you feel up to it, put on a helmet and some shoulder pads and sit on the mattress while it rolls down Janpath.

Actually, Big Bazaar is not that bad at all. I would recommend it for all kinds of kitchen stuff and appliances including geyzer, fridge and so on. For furniture, you should find good stuff in many local places - I would suggest getting real wood stuff, not particle board that is just painted on. For pots, please avoid Aluminum even though the sales guy is going to give you a 101 class on heat conduction. OK, that will cost you 2 pints!

Cheers
