My parents-in-law used to eat there in the 50's when they came to Kolkata from Dhanbad occasionally, and my husband remembers them bringing him treats in special tins. Sadly we couldn't find out very much about it when we were in Kolkata - but I'm sure someone here will tell me something

Judi, I was born and brought up in Calcutta and spent many a happy hour in Firpo's, I have some photos of the inside in the 50's, I will dig them out and e-mail them to you. As you must know it burned down and was never rebuilt. In it's hey-day it was THE place to party and dine on a Saturday night, very formal dress only and on your best behaviour. It was very popular with the covenanted hands working in India, and the dance bands were exceptional and the cuisene was also first class.

hey, thanks for this! I'm really looking forward to seeing the photos. And what you tell me really fits in with my father-in-law's recollections.

During my school days Firpos was the ultimate place u went...smoked Hilsa.. great breads & the dukbungalow chicken... chicken cooked in red wine... The smoked Hilsa needed praise... million bones were removed & tea leaves were sprinkled on the charcoal fire while the fish smoked...

In those olden days there was a clan who called themselves "Young Bengal"... one of the hight lights were to eat at an eatery called Wilson's hotel.... You will find mention of it in the writings of Rabindranath Tagore. Later on an Italian family started this restaurant called Firpo's & then a Swiss family started Flury's... land marks of Kolkata....

Calcutta was the 1st country outside of Australia (my home) and New Zealand I had visited. I was only a young teenager at that time.. We toured throughout the Far East for 18mths, and I found Calcutta facinating.I really enjoyed the stay there and the people I met. Visited the Jain Temple, (beautiful, ) The Victoria Memorial, the Ochterlony Monument ,the gardens, the zoo etc....I loved to go to the markets. I remember a night club called The Golden Slipper.. We worked at Firpo's Rest, 7 days a week if I recall right.. The band leader at Firpo's was Cecial Dorsie.. I was sad to see that it had burnt down, do you know when that was?.

The menu changed every day and always consisted of soup, accompanied by dinner rolls, followed by two options: roast chicken or mutton.
The fish course that was usually fried or steamed, was accompanied by finger chips and Russian salad. Vegetarian courses were totally unheard of. Dessert would normally be caramel custard, lemon or chocolate souffle, or fruit salad with cream or custard.
