My recent trip to Gujarat was for very short duration. My itinerary was as follows
Day1: Mumbai to Diu by air and Diu sight seeing. Reaching Gir forest in the evening
Day2: Gir safari two times. Arrival Somnath by after noon
Day3: Porbandar-Dwarka-Bet Dwarka-Nageswar-Porbandar
Day4: Porbandar sight seeing
Day5: Reaching Ahmedabad in morning by overnight train Saurashtra Mail
         Lothal sight seeing
Day6: Admedabad and Gandhinagar sight seeing
Day7: Ahmedabad to Delhi

Gir and Diu worth a stay for two nights for relaxing

Thanks for the photos Abhijit Sur, for me it's a nice insight into Diu, where I plan to spend a week unwinding from my travels though Gujarat.
How was the National Park at Sasan Gir, any Asiaatic Lion sightings, is the park itself scenic, is it forested, hilly???

Any tips for good places to eat along the way, Is Dwarka worth the visit, as it's a bit out of the way on this Itinerary it's kinda hard to fit in.
Is is like Rishikesh/Ohmkareshwar/Chitrakoot

Will take a look at either Bet or Lothal as well, based on you pictures. How close is Prbander to Dwarka

My general plan is Bhuj, Nalia to hopefully see the Great India Bustard, Mandvi for traditional boat building, then on to Ahmedabad, where a internet buddy will show me the city, Modehra if we've time (how far out of the city is it IWTGB I believe you've been there, is it doable by taxi or bus on a day trip and also the big Step well how far by taxi)
Then onto Vadadora for Champaner, Junagadh, Sasan Gir, Palitana, Dwarka and finally down time in Dui for a week or so.

Leaving 1st November.

cy

there is a big step well at adalaj which i think is about 20km out of the city. it's absolutely stunning and well worth a visit.

modhera was a lot further (i was on a bus with a bunch of students visiting a number of sites so i'm not sure how far it was. i know it was late in the day when we got there). at a rough guess, looking at google maps, i'd say it's about 50-60kms north-west, but you know what 50ks in india can be like! it's certainly worth the trip, and i think that there are buses going there.
just is.

Cheers IWTGB I'm quite excited, though the work situation looks like cancelling out planned trip for 4 months in March 2010.

So we'll have to make the most of this trip.....

50 - 60Km isn't too bad for a day trip we are three on this trip so taxis are affordable..

I'll post loads of photos I promise..

I'm really looking forward to Girnar Hill and Palitana too, though how far I'll make it is in question..

Here's some nice photos I found, whilst researching the trip Just right for a Sunday morning.

Palitana

Girnar Hill & Junagadh

Champaner

Modhera

Dwarka is 120 km rom Porbandar. From there 30km is Okha from where you have to go by boat to Bet.
Lions are elusive as usual. Chances are bright in the morning Safari. However you can definitely see at Gir interpretation zone as the area is around 10 sq km and there are 7 lions. You can see the forest through my photos. It is basically dry deciduous forest. Forest is not scenic as Ranthambore, it is flat. There are 58 artificial water tubs scattered all around the forest to feed water to animals. Water is a scarcity inside the forest
Dwarka  I visited twice. Temple is nice. Light house is also fine which offers magnificent view of the town and sea. The road from Dwarka to Bet will enrich you with some knowledge as there are plenty of wind mills and salt pans
Step well is very near to Ahmedabad. You can see it on the way to Akshardham temple. If you plan to go there keep 4 hrs with you inside. It did not impress me much.
Taxi rate:
Indica Rs6 per km(AC), rs5 for non ac.
Innova Rs9 per km
No night halt charge but you have to pay return fare up to the point from where you hired the vehicle. It is applicable, of course,  if you get dropped some where.
Don't miss Somnath on the way from Gir to Porbandar. You can see an arrow which is directed towards South pole and there is no land mass in between. It was made in ancient time.
