Hello - I'm planning on flying in to Bangalore for the first time in November, as it suits the itinerary I'm thinking about. However, I read somewhere on India Tree that it can take 3 hours to get from airport to city and vice versa. Can that be true? - if it is it might influence where I end up flying into!
Thanks
Ray

No I don't think you need to travel for 3 hours, atleast I didn't during my trips recently. By the way when are you landing?
In my opinion you should choose your city of arrival depending on the ticket deal and your itinerary...

Thank you jyotirmoy.
If I do start from Bangalore, it looks as if I would be landing around 1500. Ideally, I want to include Mysore, Madikeri (and perhaps Kannur or somewhere else on that part of the coast) and the Nilgiri Hills on this trip - so Bangalore seems to make sense as an entry point (especially as I've not been there before). I can fly there from the UK for about the same cost as to Kochi, Trivandrum, Mangalore and Goa - each of those has some advantages, too, especially as I have enjoyed previous train journeys on the Coast of Malabar!
Any further advice or comment would be greatly appreciated.

As with most major cities Ray it depends on the Traffic.

Last year I had no problems as I landed quite late at night and it took around 40 mins.

In your case(1500) the traffic will be heavy so I guess anywhere up to 1 & 1/2 hours should be expected.

Your intended itinery sounds great, have a great trip.

Keep in mind a Senior India Tree Member (John SW) has settled in the Nilgiris of late.

All the best.

There are deluxe buses that ply frequently from the airport to the city and vice versa.
There are no yellow black taxis in Bangalore. There are radio cabs and their agents will approach you. Check the rates, the agents make a lot of confusion and as a result you end up paying more.
If you haven't visited Belur & Halebid you should do it. There are conducted bus tours from Bangalore.

An advice for Bangalore visitors. If you are leaving Bangalore & want a cab to take you to the airport from the city, book your cab atleast 3 hours before you intend to start. During my last visit I called for radio cab 1-1/2 hours before and it didn't turn up, luckily a member who speaks Kanada virtually hijacked a cab going on some one else's call off the road and bundled me in to it. It was a Sunday and the high way was quite empty, the driver drove the cab 140 kms/hr... I just had enough time to have a few drags of my ciggie before the last & final call was made !!!!!

There are official taxis and official buses at the new Bengaluru International airport.

Bangalore is a huge city, so the time it takes depends which part of the city you are going to!

In the evenings it takes 35 minutes to get to the MG Road/Brigade Road junction from the airport by car.

It's a three-hour drive from Bangalore centre to Mysore centre during the day, and another three hours from Mysore to Ooty.

The taxi fare from the airport to MG Road is Rs.400 to Rs.500, and the bus fare is much less.

Thank you all for your tips - the detail is useful, and I appreciate your support for my trip Vandy. Thanks jyotirmoy for the suggestion regarding Belur and Halebid. I'll look into them a bit more closely. Thanks too, John, for the drive times Mysore/Ooty - always useful to have a rough idea of timings!
I may well come back for more info/comment, once my trip starts taking a bit more shape. Many thanks to you all for now!
Ray

I have done that journey at least eight times this year, in the evening, and it has never taken more than 40 minutes.

I was just in bangalore. I think it took me 1 hour to reach Cooke Town. MG Road/Brigade is about 15 minutes beyond that. But I arrived at 9:30 in the morning so was hitting the end of the morning rush. Still nothing near 3 hours, though. Getting back to the airport took 1 hour, including stopping to drop some people off, stopping for tea, etc. :o
