This film released in 1974 made Shyam Benegal and Shabana Azmi and heralded  new wave cinema in Bollywood.
The story deals with boredom of a rich college student at his family's farm and his attraction towards the comely wife of a poor, deaf & dumb potter's wife who is employed as a maid at the farm. When this  potter is punished and humiliated for a petty crime he runs away. Alone & vulnerable his wife succumbs to the advances of the rich student and becomes pregnant. At this point she is thrown out of the job leaving her totally alone & destitute. Her husband returns and is beaten mercilessly by the rich young man. No one dares to intervene..... but then one young urchin throws a stone that shatters a glass pane and the invinsibility of the rich.

Correction:
This film was released in 1984, not 1974 as mentioned in my post.

Dear Hyderabadi bhai I think I am wrong both times, the imb link puts the release in 1977
This film was shot in your state, and the shots of lush green paddy fields, tall palmyra trees against a sky illuminated by twilight.... the overwhelming fertility of the nature highlights Luxmi's craving for bearing a child and the pain of not being able to do so. Certain shots reminds me of a scene in Fellini's Amarcord, where the mentally challanged young man climbs a tree laden with fruit amidst shimmering green landscape and shouts " I want a woman... I want a woman"

In my opinion Shabana Azmi did her best in this film.

Yes, Jyoti da, Ankur is based in AP and more specifically the Telangana region of AP. I have not seen all of Shyam Benegal's movies but I think Nishant is also based in AP (if I remember). Shyam Benegal himself is a Hyderabadi:  http://en.wikipedia....i/Shyam_Benegal :)

Another movie - Mandi, is based in Hyderabad:

Quote

Mandi (Hindi: मंडी) (translation: Market Place) is a 1983 Hindi movie directed by Shyam Benegal.

The film is a satirical comedy on politics and prostitution, and stars Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil. Based on a classic Urdu short story Aanandi by Pakistani writer Ghulam Abbas, the film narrates the story of a brothel, situated in the heart of a city, an area that some politicians want for its prime locality.[1]

The film won the 1984 National Film Award for Best Art Direction for Nitish Roy. It was selected Indian Panorama at Filmostav, Bombay 1984, and was invited to the Los Angeles Exposition (FILMEX), the Hong Kong International Film Festival 1984, and London Film Festival 1983
