This is the latest for domestic travelers – the Indian Railways have launched a package for those who love budget travel. The itinerary is for 10 days and the charges come to approximately 500 rupees per day. It is called the common man’s package of the Palace on wheels. It was initially launched in 2004 but did not prove to be profitable. The agency who organized it on behalf of the railways put in their papers and it has now been taken over by the IRCTC. The name is Bharat Darshan and it has been running to full capacity from December 2008. The IRCTC owns three trains and organizes two tours per month. It has netted profits of 5%. The trains are smaller in comparison to regular long distance trains – it has only seven second class sleeper coaches apart from a pantry car and a safety compartment. The charges include food, local travel and sightseeing.

Take a 10-day tour of India for just Rs 5K

I highlighted this trip a couple of weeks back Sadhuji, good to see it's proving succesful. It really offers a good look at the religious sites of North India.

Thanks for drawing our atention to it once again.

Rail is the best way to travel in India and see all its wonders safely and comfortably. That has been my own experience recently, after I read Maya Radj's free online (mayaradj dot com) novel (R's Journey - The Wounded Elephant).

In the form of an entertaining story (a young Indian eager to migrate to the USA who discovers the value of his cultural, spiritual and philosophical heritage during a journey across Bharat after an initial meeting with his guru), this book is also a contemporary crash course on Sanatan Dharm.
