Hi everybody!
Im new to the tree, and it will be my first time to India! So bear with me and any help would be most appreciated.
Im flying into Mumbai at the beggining of April, and planning to stay for up to 6 months.
Im going solo ( am female by the way). I really havent planned an itinerary at all, was just going to wing it, am I going to find my self utterly confused, overcome and in a bit of trouble by not having it organised or very mapped out?
I was generally thinking of staying in Mumbai for about 5 days then heading south, Goa? maybe meet a few people then onto Kerala then make my way around and up, finally up to Nepal at some stage.
Any help would be great,
Thanks guys!!!!

Welcome to the tree natnut.
In 6 months you will be able to cover a lot of places. Keep in my mind that April is the begining of summer and temperatures will begin to rise in the plains of India. By May and June it will become quite hot and humid. End June will see heavy rainfall descending in coastal areas. If you tell us what interests you we may be in a better position to suggest itinerary.

DITTO! I would head North first, maybe even take a flight straight to Nepal, then work my way through the Indian Himalaya's Uttarkhand then Himachal Pradesh. Leave the South to the back end of your 6mth journey, when the weather should be more agreeable. KK

Hi guys thankyou for your replies!
So if I was to head to the north first can you suggest a good place to start where I could meet a few travellers as this is my first time overseas and I travelling by myself and to be honest a little scared! hence the Goa idea as I know there are quite a few westerners there and seems like a good place to get my bearings and chill out for a bit! Not that I want an overly touristy experience.
As far as what im interested in...Everything! of course monuments, tembles and just generally the amazing culture, abut im also very interested in India's wildlife and country side, I want to experience the great varity in indias environment and landscapes, I would like to go to as many national parks as possible too! Sorry I know this is a bit vague.....but if you guys could let me in on a few of the bigger places and smaller places that you have really loved this might be a good starting point for me! (perhaps starting in the north as I like your idea of doing it that way)
I should also add that im on a very tight budget! im not planning to do any organised tours. This point leads me to my next question would $3500AUD be ok for this amount of time???? I know its cutting it pretty fine indead!!!???
Thanks everyone!

If you like history & monuments spend a few days in Delhi. Neighbouring state Rajasthan also has plenty. I second KK's suggestion, early April is quite pleasant in Delhi & Rajasthan, so visit these places and head straight for the mountains. During the monsoon fly to Leh.

After Delhi, there are many options for places to meet other travellers and get your bearings, Rishikesh, Mcleodganj (Dharamsala) or Kaser Devi above Almora, which offers some amazing views and crisp mountain air.
Pushkar in Rajasthan..............
Forget Goa until November at least.
Rajasthan has many places of interest, but personally I think Madhya Pradesh is just as good, many many forts and palaces.
Orchha is a gem, as in Mandu in the south. Bandavgarh in the east of the state is one of the best parks for sighting tigers and you'll feel like Kipling as you ride around in the lush jungle.
For some information on various states you can look here

I agree with cyber, Bandhabgarh is the palce to head to and most tiger sightings take place at this particular sanctuary.
