Hi

I have been wondering over the last few weeks as my husband has been, and will continue to travel between Australia and India over the next several years.

He is eligible to apply for OCI, and will do so next week, as he was born in India and has his Indian birth certificate as evidence, so I don't believe he will have any issues (apart from a wait which may hinder his travel). Our daughter will be eligible as well and he will be applying for her OCI as well.

Me on the other hand have no Indian connections apart from him, and have become sick of applying for a tourist visa everytime I go. On reading the criteria for PIO for a spouse, I am hoping that I will have no trouble applying for a PIO so I will be able to travel with him. I have just applied for an official copy of our marrige certificate, but have never changed my name on my Australian Passport or many other documents, ie drivers license, health cards, or at work.

I am just wondering about other people's experiences in this area namly these few questions

Am I Eligible for PIO card when my husband will be applying for OCI?
Should I change my name on all my documents before applying for PIO card?
Will I have to submit my Australian passport while I am waiting for the application to be processed?

Thanks
Net

Welcome to the Tree, nettie :)

I'm afraid I can't help you with this rather complex issue, but there are members who'll be able to answer your questions. Just be patient for a while, and someone will be here to help you.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, it seems that applicants for a PIO Card take part in a lottery. It all depends on the official who handles your application.

Indian friends of ours (Indian blood; parents born and educated in India, etc.) have been fighting officialdom for nearly 10 years as they were both born in Uganda and expelled by Idi Amin in the 1970's.

At that time they were given British Passports and were evacuated to the UK.

Numerous visits to Chennai have been met with unhelpfulness, but they are hoping that they will have their PIO Cards before long.
