Hi all,

I'm planning to head to India/Pakistan for 5 weeks (Jan 10th-Feb17th). Starting & ending in Delhi and looking for a feasible circuit to travel.

Being my first trip to India I thought I would concentrate on central/north India and pop across the border to see parts of Pakistan.
As it will be winter I was wondering if travel in the North is feasible and if so is it worth it? Are mueseums/services/roads etc usually closed?

I'm interested in sites of historical significance, mueseums, scenary as well as just enjoying the goings on of daily life. Also looking for any interesting train trips in the north.

I'm thinking to visit:

Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Udaipur-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Delhi.   - is it worth travelling over to Varanasi too?

If not too cold maybe from Delhi-Chandigarh then onto Shimla and up to Manali.

The over to Amritsar-Lahore-Multan-Islamabad-Delhi

Any suggestions would be appreciated!  :)

Thanks,

piraterum

as far as the weather goes, delhi, jodphur, varanasi, agra and chandigarh should be fine - maybe a little cold, but not freezing. i can't speak for the rest, but i visited those places in february and the weather was ideal for travelling.

how long are you planning on spending in each place? and how are you planning on travelling between them? i would suggest several days in each city, travel in india can be exhausting and you don't want to be forever schlepping your weary ass around the country.
just is.

Thanks for your feedback. I wasn't too sure about the weather in mid winter!

As you suggested, I'm looking a spending a few days in each city. I don't want to spend the whole trip just travelling. I hope to do most of the long distance travelling on overnight trains. For the shorter distances buses or trains. Trying not to cover too great an area. I'll have to come back for another trip :)

Do you think 5 weeks is enough time for that plan?

Yes you can do this trip in 5 weeks. Browse the Rajasthan forum for ideas.
Since you are interested in history you will find Delhi to be a treasure house. Read the posts on Delhi's history in Delhi section.
Feel free to ask questions and some of us would certainly respond.
Welcome to the tree.
