Delhi has to be the best place in India for buying souvenirs, provided you know where to look!

There's a long row of government 'emporia' (I wish they'd find a more user-friendly term!) on Baba Kharak Singh Marg. This is the road which is at a 90 degree angle to the Regal Cinema building. There's one emporium for each state & each one has been given a beautiful name. I'll post the names wherever I can recall them.
The collection of handicrafts  is simply, simply fabulous. You'll find everything from cane to leather to fabrics to pottery here & prices to suit every pocket.
Open 10 am to 6.30 pm. They close for lunch between 1.00 & 2.00 daily. Open 10 am to 6.30 pm.Closed on Sundays.

When I lived in Delhi, my other favourite place used to be Central Cottage Industries Emporium. Caveat: the touts will try to take you to spurious shops of the same name. The one i'm talking about is a pink stone 8-storey building located in Jawahar Vapar Bavan, on Janpath, opposite the Tibetan market. Open 10.00 am to 7.00 pm. Closed on Sundays. This place is a tad pricey, but their stuff is super.

Dilli Haat is an absolute treasure for economically-priced souvenirs. I like the place for is friendly atmosphere, its architecture styled (somewhat) along the lines of a village market & the fact that bargaining is possible here. This is located on Aurobindo Marg, opposite INA Market in south Delhi.

The surajkund Crafts Fair used to be a great place for souvenirs a few years ago. I'm now put off by the kitsch that the sellers try to pass of as 'handicrafts' & the crowds.
Pleased by life's gauds, pained by its pinpricks and stings,
Swayed by ignoble hopes, ignoble fears;
Threading life's tangled maze without life's clue,
Busy with means, yet heedless of their ends....

SoulCurry

This is very useful for my forthcoming trip to India and, Delhi in particular, in August this year.  My wife should be pleased with this info.  :D  :)

Thanks for posting.

Yes Soul I agree with you about the "do" at Surajkund, yes it is now a "do"
Dilli Hat is my current favourite. There is a gastronomic angle too. The food stalls selling specialities from all the states.....
