With Jyoti da's suggestion I've added a couple of Majid Majidi's movies to my Netflix list.

You won't regret it bhai Hyderabadi. This Children of Heaven film is fantastic.
This film centres on two poor kids, brother & sister. The brother having got his sister’s worn out shoe repaired stops at a grocery store keeping the bag containing the shoes ouside the shop. A garbage collector takes it away. Now she can’t go to school. The boy has just one pair of sneakers. They think up a solution. The girl’s school starts early morning and ends just before the boy’s school starts.
Soon after a marathon is announced and the third prize is a pair of sports shoes which the brother promises to win and gift it to his sister.
While the rest of the happy school children with their colourful shoes gear up for the great race, these two children of heaven had been racing against time, the walls of the narrow alleyways closing down on them. All they have are four little feet, two big hearts, four eyes that speak and a pair of tattered sneakers. There is the sound of distant thunder as ominous as the head master’s stick, ringing of the school bell, the finishing line of yet another day’s marathon. The shots of the anxious & impatient brother waiting for his sister and the exchange of the shoes shot from different angles & heights.. simply superb. The uphill journey on the bike, the splendour of the city, the flyovers and the quaint havens of the rich, the lush green lawns and fertile flower beds, our child of heaven is on the swing with another child…
Racing to become third the child of heaven failed and became the first, useless medal, equally useless applause, then at the end this child of heaven appears on the doorway broken and blistered to confront another child of heaven. The dreams, the solace, the eyes, the goldfish and the split second shot of the purple dream that nestled among other things in the carrier of their father’s cycle.
