Shabe-e-miraj which fell on the 2nd. of August refers to the Prophet’s Ascension to the Heavens. This holy evening is celebrated at the Dargah of Baba Nizamuddin. The night journey focuses on the tale of love between Mohammed and Allah.

Sarmad the martyred Sufi poet of Delhi wrote: “The Mullah said that Ahmad went to heaven/ Sarmad says that heaven descended into Ahmad”
On this night the Dargah looks magical. People offer flowers and prayers at the grave of another famous Sufi poet Amir Khusrau. He called Delhi “The twin sister of paradise and a true copy of the Throne of God on the face of the earth.”

Delhi became the centre of Sufi movement by the end of the 13th. century and was named Hazrat-e-Dilli. Delhi had also been traditionally known as “Baees khawaja ji chaukhat”, which means the threshold of 22 Sufi masters.
It is believed that Prophet gifted some personal belongings including a cloak & prayer carpet to the elders of the Chisthi order. Khawaja Gharib Nawaz brought these to Ajmer. Baba Farid sent these to Delhi through his disciple Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, who in turn handed over these to Hazrat Naseeruddin Chiragh Dilli and according to his will these were entombed with him.

As I wrote earlier, hardly any one lights a lamp of remembrance at the tombs of the mighty kings & badshas but at the Sufi dargahs candles are lit, incense sticks spread fragrance of love & peace.

Om Shanti.
