The word Gandh/Gandha means smell/fragrance.  Those who manufacture/trade/deal in aromatic substances were called Gandhis.

Jwellery and perfumes both these adornments had been historically sold in the lanes of Dariba Kaalan in Chandni Chowk right from the Mughal days. Now although there are many silver smiths here the number of perfumeries has dwindled to just a few. These perfumes derived from natural flowers are called Ittar. In past royal families, rich & aristocrats came here in search of exotic Ittars. With the introduction of synthetic perfumes the popularity of Ittar dropped. More over synthetic perfumes are many times cheaper than Ittars. There are still some people who continue to patronize these perfumeries. With the rising popularity of spa treatments and aromatherapy demand for natural essences and essential oils is again growing.
For visitors walking the old Delhi circuit I recommend visiting these age old perfumeries handed down from one generation to another and “smell” the old world. The myriad crystal containers containing hundreds of exotic perfumes and the stories the owners will tell you……….

When I was in Jaipur, I was gifted a crystal vial of pure essence called "Aphrodisiac." :) It is absolutely divine. I've used it very sparingly over the years, but it is so evocative of India, that I don't want it to finish, ever!

I would love to hear the story behind that one. :)

willing to unclench your fist." ~ Barack Obama.

Yes there are stories behind such names. The Haqeems of olden days probably knew about aromatherapy. Varieties of Ittar were known to evoke varieties of mood & feelings.

Whenever it's been worn, there've always been complimentary remarks.
