I hasten to add I've not done this run but many use this option who live long term in Almora. It also closer to Delhi and must surely be more scenic than Gorakhpur.

I understand that finances are of concern, but a return flight from Chennai to Colombo, at Rp 7469, (makemytrip.com) would spare you a fair amount of time and hassle if you could swing it. Just my opinion, but I don't think the security issue should be much of a issue for a quick in-and-out trip.

Shared should be considerably less...I really can't remember but it can't be a lot or the jeeps wouldn't do any business as people would take the bus. The jeeps run when they are full - it's a regular service. I would guess 100 Rupees at the most, allowing for the rise in fuel prices.

The Tanakpur run, as far as I can tell from googling, requires a 10 hour bus ride from Kathgodam to the border... is that true? Makes me hesitant to want to go that way. Any better information from what i could find?
At AlanD re: price: Thanks! I guessed a little higher than that. It always helps when arguing (bartering!) with the jeep wallahs to have an idea what I should be aiming for.
m2: Sri Lanka was definitely an option... the problem is, when traveling with friends I was coming back from Delhi, so I had plane tickets from there. So if I go that direction, I can use the credit from the cancelled tickets. That, and security was a concern as I haven't been able to find many people who actually know what the situation in Sri Lanka is.

Tanakpur is no more than 3 -4 hours from Kathgodam and Bambassa is about 3 hours from here.
