I never thought I will get it, thought the problem was exagerated and was amused when people talk about it, yes I got the virus.

I got the virus by downloading, supposedly antispy tool from some rogue website and it installed activeX I think. My IE browser was hijacked, I could not delete any program, my firefox would not start too and search would always lead me to strange search engine. No amount of rebooting helped, my antivirus software was disabled and stack memory buffer was flooded! I was handicapped!

Finally little tech advice and I could start firefox and download and run a legit antispyware and fix it! Life is normal again.

Now I think I will buy memorystick and install portableapps etc.

Any ideas about online storage about 4 gig of photo etc I cannot afford to lose! For some reason my CDRW drive does not store data on CD, it works fine but when I access CD again, no data :crying:

Have you thought of backing up to your own online webspace?

I backup to my 500gb external drive directly from the camera and then edit and save (good ones) on Flickr. I find that lots of people are beginning to plagiarize pictures on Flickr though.. ;)

I have had my own webspace for a while on 1&1.com and am (lazily) backing up. :crying:

The other options as you may know already are places like Carbonite.com which many recommend (about US$50.00) unlimited per year, but has it's limitations when you go thru the terms and conditions.

Looking around a bit more and looking to pacify my own fears:

I thought all my worries ended with the death of film/poloroid.  :crying:

I was wondering, if CafeKlysm suite is better or portableapps suite with portable office applications. I do not see Office applications in CafeKlysm!

Also, Online storage...

I've not yet tried Midnitetoker's  CafeKlysm but I have tried Portableapps and it's good.

The only 'online storage' I'm currently using is Flickr. Try Kodak Gallerycomes with some editing software, or Snapfish or Shutterfly... Picasaweb.

The key in choosing one would be imho, to choose a stable service. No point in losing all your photos if the company foldsup and disappears. The above ones have been around for a while and will likely be there for a while. Hopefully. :o :ranting:

It all depends on how paranoid/OCD you are!

We have backups at home, but having your stuff online is a really good idea because if your computer and backups are in your house they could both disappear at the same time.

If you only need a couple of GB, use Google Mail for your backups.

Flickr Pro ($24.95 a year - unlimited) is also great for photo storage - it is possible to have a private directory that only you (and other people you allow, such as family members) can see.

Web space is cheap enough - www.godaddy.com is $50 a year for 10GB or $80 a year for 150GB.  You can FTP your files to your web space or, if it's for photo storage you can install some free software on the server to upload your photos.  You also have plenty of space for your blog, web site, etc!

All these made me buy 16GB corsair survivir USB drive ($50 Buy.com after $40 rebate, which I will forget anyways, so $90 for me!). Claims drop and dent the furniture! Safe under 200 Ft water (as if I am ever going within 10 ft of water!) Let us see how fast it is to work with!

Back up to back up to back up.. would you believe I have 2 - 3 copies of my pictures?  :o

Come to think of it that may be way less than what I would have spent on film and processing, and never mind the duds.

These are memories you cant place a value on, and I have many many albums full of of pictures starting from when I was a kid to when I gave up film to be scanned and backed up backed up backed up....backed up.. ;)
