We arrive in Mumbai, by air in October. We want mobile phone service. we own a suitable unlocked (no sim locks) triband gsm phone; totally compatible with all Indian gsm carriers (Airtel etc).

Can we buy a sim card in Mumbai? What documentation will we need?

I've heard it is impossible for foreigners to buy sim cards now, because of enhanced security.

Does anyone actually know what the story is. We'd really appreciate recent experience in doing just this!

Thanks

Foreigners can buy a pre-paid sim card in Mumbai.

There is a shop on every corner where you can buy one, and you only need your normal travel documents (passport) to get one.

If you don't have your documents with you, the man in the shop or your rickshaw driver will probably put the card in his name.  He has to provide a photocopy of his PAN card or ration book.

There are lots of companies to choose from.  I've been very happy with Airtel.
