hi everbody I m planning a trip to ladakh in july08. probably I ll take the bus route from delhi-manali-leh. while on the way back via Spiti route (I guess Tomba gompa might come in way). I wanted to inquire how much time or duration will it take in either of ways and further travelling expenses might go up to around abt???and probably by when should I book the tickets.
Morever how many days approx may b required to cover the foll..
Nubra valley, Khardung La pass, Pangong lake, the monastries of hemis, thiksey and other local Leh tourist destinations...
Further do anybody know...are there any camping facilities are available at Stok Kangri.
waiting the replies...

You'll probably find this of interest;  http://alpspitze.al....stok_kangri.htm
There is a base camp at Stok Kangri.

From Manali to Leh by share jeep took me 16hrs & the driver was crazy & really put his foot down, so i'd add 2-3hrs by bus, i think some of the HPTDC buses from Manali actually do it over 2 days stopping o/night at Sarchu or Darcha??? (not recommended due to altitude sickness)

Looking at the amount of things you want to fit in 2-3weeks would be good, bearing in mind you need 2-3 days to acclimatise, drink plenty of water!

From Manali to Leh by share jeep took me 16hrs & the driver was crazy & really put his foot down-- KK they really don't have much choice with them, there is a method in their madness, unlike buses they don't have luxury of oodles of BHP available and yet they drive almost packed to brim. so these guys set their puny engines well on advanced timing and try to not to break the pep.

My take on this ( after having done three out of the four land routes to Leh) is that it´s a lot better to tackle the Manali-Leh road on the return leg. Do basic acclimatization via Spiti and you won´t have to endure the cannonball run (16 hours is a good run , often takes longer ) , or The Vomit Hilton Sarchu.
