A Trans-Asia railway might soon be a reality – originating from Dhaka, it would go on to London. The distance of 11,000 odd Kilometers is expected to be covered in 23 days. The opening of the Dhaka-Kolkata railway link was the first step in this direction. It may be noted that the Trans-Siberian Express runs from Russia to the Orient – this train was immortalized by Agatha Christie in her famous Hercule Poirot thriller ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. The journey time here is 15 days for the 9,200 kilometers distance. Another long journey is the African Train journey from Cape Town to Egypt – 35 days to cover 9,600 kilometers.

You can do this already.
The only section missing now is between Bam and Zahedan in south-east Iran. Also, the current service between Zahedan and Quetta only runs every month or so, and is constantly delayed by sand drifts. MOst travellers just take the bus, which is much quicker. Apart from that, it's been possible to do this for a while now.
There's nothing really new in that article, I think the journalist just looked up Mark Smith's brilliant Man in Seat 61 site, and copied down the itinery.
