What is the norm for housing deposits in Delhi/New Delhi?  In Bangalore, it's 10 months. Period.  Two sets of friends in Dwarka (New Delhi) have both paid fr less than that (one two months, one nothing).  Is the housing deposit not as rigid a requirement in Delhi? Or were they just lucky?

It's not rigid anywhere, its the norm but we found it negotiable even in Bangalore.  It scares the hell out of me handing over 10 months as deposit knowing that there's a good chance you'll never see it again!
Smoked for 25 years but now not smoked since 13th Jan. Am I now a non smoker, a smoker who doesn't smoke or an ex smoker? Do I have to even have a title, can I not just be a 'me'? Has not smoking made me crazy?, probably!

Yep. Me, too.  One friends had to write post dated checks for 10 months--that's totally acceptable. But when the deposit doesn't even go toward rent... that's a big chunk of back  up for yourself to just hand over for a year...

While there is no hard n fast rule, but 3 months deposit is accepted norm, with a possibility of negotiation down to one month. Delhi house owners are yet to witness the en masse exodus related to software industry so they still not thinking on the lines of big rent retentions.
