Well, we think you might be able to, but it may take a week to get it, so be sure to allow enough time as the Indian Consulate will want to contact your home country and make certain you are a desierable visitor.

This is very misleading and plain incorrect.
You CAN NOT apply for an Indian visa in India.
As I understand it, if you are applying for an Indian Visa in a country that is not your country of residence, the application will be faxed to the High Commission of Embassy or India in your home country.
This is an additional cost to the applicant and you can expect some delay in the visa being issued.

Hi,
I applied for Indian visa in Chiang Mai, north Thailand.
(was in Thailand since my 6 month Indian visa had expired and wanted to get back to India)
Took some 10 days to get the visa..
Got it without problem tough it was my third time in India during the past year and a half.
Bangkok is also possible, but Chiang mai is a great not too big city to hang around and wait for a visa. Is is no problem at all and many tourists do it!
Don't worry
