Like Cyberhippie, I'm not a great fan of the buses.....

"NEW DELHI (CNN) -- A bus carrying pilgrims to Hindu shrines in southwestern India careened over the side of a steep hill Sunday night, killing 37 and injuring more than 40 others, police said.

The remains of the bus lie in a gorge after the accident in Nashik district.

Five children were among the dead, said Nikhil Gupta, the police superintendent in Nashik, about 160 km (100 miles) east of Mumbai."

Read it all

This bit is all too familier....

"The bus was only made to seat 45 people but was carrying about 80 passengers when it crashed"

I have read too many of those crash stories; they are why I seldom take buses in India. Too scarey!

One thing with most De Luxe buses and Sleeper buses is that they don't allow people to sit on the roof. Certain express buses run by State Governments will not stop for local people travelling from village to village. As for safety - well no one can guarantee that . Depends solely on the driver and his skills. If you saw the local buses around here - like many local buses heaps of mobile wrecking metal - with the many people up on the roof as well, you pray there is no accident with them. I've travelled many times on buses between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer and it's been fine.
