This used to be a regular feature in movies. The basic intention was to create suitable effects so that the viewer did not feel bored as the story unfolded. Even the associated songs helped in achieving this objective. We therefore saw the silence that hung between the hero and the heroine as a boatman sailed past singing a song which described the mental agony that the duo sitting on the river bank was undergoing. Or consider a bunch of playful young girls on bicycles going for a picnic, giggling all the way – the background immediately switched on to the fast mode and the accompanying songs did full justice to the situation.
Background music has now become an important and integral part of the telesoaps that are all about revengeful women in large families who continuously threaten and inflict mental torture on the innocent inmates. When these lady villains descend on the scene, there are the rumbling sounds of thunder followed by the roll of drums and lightning strikes. Occasionally there are the hissing sounds of snakes. It is believed that inclusion of acoustics of this nature keep the TRP ratings high and the producers happy. A large amount of talent is being regularly unearthed, thanks to the reality shows. They need outlets. TV soaps give them the opportunities. Hence, background music composers and playback singers seize them. The bottom line is to generate happiness all round.

Remember that one note of tar shanai when Durga's father came to know of his daughter's death in Ray's Pather Panchali?
