i thought that perhaps we could have a thread so that members can let us know in advance if there's any indian movies, or shows on india in their city.

i see that 'Parineeta' is showing on sbs here tonight, looks like a late one for me.

has anyone seen it? any reviews?
just is.

Alas, there is seldom anything "india" on TV here ... :(

there's not a huge amount here, but sbs regularly broadcast indian movies, and the abc often has stories about india on its magazine programs, plus there's the odd travel show.
just is.

Alas, my India-on-TV is usually limited to an episode or two of The Amazing Race when India is included on the contestants' itinerary. These episodes are intensely amusing, because invariably at least one team (and sometimes more than one) has a TOTAL MELTDOWN! They can take sub-Saharan Africa in their stride, but Ma India completely undoes them. :)

The website www.televisionwithoutpity.com has hilarious "re-caps" of all the episodes of the show - digital drifter would like these - they're real snark-fests! - see, e.g., these re-caps of a couple of India episodes, one of which involved seaching for a clue in Chandni Chowk and the other of which involved driving in Chennai - pure comedy gold!

Couple of weeks back amazing race had India segment, where they showed Mumbai and contestants trying to find out addresses and deliver gas cylinders and also make garlands and assemble bollywood posters, hilarious. I think they edited out anti India tirades by chinese dad! But it was funny to watch!

Great theme tune Hyderabadi! Very moving and dramatic.

Fell asleep about halfway through - well you know how it is - a hard day's slog at the computer, a gourmet meal and a few glasses of wine and it takes something like a global financial meltdown to hold my attention - come to think of it, not even that.

I've got it on DVD though and will try again - I've been told the second half was "quite interesting"

For UK viewers

I've just noticed that "Monsoon Railway Part 1" is also being repeated tonight on BBC4 at 11.30 - presumably the second part is at the same time next week.

Described by the BBC as

"A look at life on India's rail network through the monsoon season, focusing on the daily routine of three workers - a train guard, a traffic inspector and an assistant driver"

I've seen this when it was first shown and it's well worth watching.

I thought PM in India was quite good. Different shall we say. But that's Merton for you, who comes across well in it.

'mumbai calling', 9.35pm abc tonight :

"Kenny Gupta (Sanjeev Bhaskar), a London-born accountant, is lumbered with running a call centre in Mumbai, India. But...he's lost his girl, lost his way and wants out. He longs for the drizzle, tarmac and supermarkets of England.

As he slides into a world of Mumbai distractions - pretty girls and cheap alcohol - Dev Rajah (Nitin Ganatra), erstwhile general manager and purveyor of clandestine goods and services, has to take over running the operation.

But when Dev receives a call from head office in London informing him that they are sending someone over to assess them, he has to bring Kenny back into the game.

When 'the person' arrives, she turns out to be Terri Johnson (Daisy Beaumont), a sexy, feisty woman in her early 30's. Terri fulfils her brief and shakes up the office. But she's then shocked to learn from her boss in England that she must stay in India to help Kenny run the call centre.

The series follows Kenny, Dev and Terri as they fight to keep the call centre going at all costs

Mumbai Calling was shot entirely on location in India with a large cast of Indian actors."
