The Airports Authority of India is in the process of developing the old airport at Mysore and the work will comprise strengthening and widening of runways and construction of new terminal building. According to sources, the Rs 50-crore project will be completed by the middle of 2008. The Tamil Nadu government has also approached AAI to expand and modernise the airport at Tuticorin.
In fact, another plea has been made by the Tamil Nadu government to convert the naval base airport located at Uchipuli (between Ramanathapuam and Rameswaram) into a civilian air terminal. AAI has referred this proposal to the defence ministry for its clearance. The state government has also evinced interest to use services of Helicopters Corporation of India to connect hill stations of Kodaikanal and Ooty.
AAI is also implementing modernisation and expansion projects at six airports - Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam, Kozhikode and Mangalore. The financial allocation for these projects by AAI is Rs 227 crore this year as against Rs 185 crore made last year. At Visakhapatnam, a new apron and runway extension has been already completed and construction of new terminal building is in progress.
In Kozhikode, construction of a new terminal building has been completed and will be put to use with in a month. At Mangalore airport, the arrival hall construction is over and a new terminal building and strengthening of the present runway are being planned. At Tiruchirapalli airport, a Rs 110-crore modernisation project is in progress.

Yes John the focus is now on the smaller towns and its tourism potential. Similar thing is happening in the north also, like flying the golden triangle sector.

It takes two hours or more (normally more because of the dreadful state of the roads) to drive from Coimbatore Airport to Ooty, but the helicopter would be a fifteen minute flight!
It's an eight hour drive from Bangalore Airport...
A helicopter service to Ooty (currently only enjoyed by government ministers and military top brass) is just what I have been waiting for!
