Hi. I want to book a ticket for the mandavi express which runs from Mumbai to Goa. I need to travel on 30th December and, knowing that it will be very busy at that time, want to book it in advance from UK. Does anybody know how to go about doing this?
Thanks

We certainly do but I fear you may already be too late!
Nope. happily there are still seats for this date, plenty of them!!
So how do you book, well first the relevant information, train name and number which you'll find below! You will need this to book.
0103 MANDOVI EXPRESS CSTM (Mumbai) 06.55 MAO (Margao, Goa)18.45 Duration 11h.50min
First of all you will need to open a free account with Indian Railways. You'll find the online registration form from IRCTC HERE
A tip this form insists on an Indian pin number (zip/post code) just make up a six digit number, the sytem will accept this and it's unimportant in the later booking stage.
Ok you've registered your acount, time to book.
Go to the booking form again at IRCTC, enter your travel dates, name, train number, just fill in the form as it is presented. this part at least is simple!! Choose the option E ticket as this allows you to print your own ticket as opposed to an I ticket, which requires an India delivery address.
The process will take you through several confirmation screens as you complete different stages of the booking process.
Actual payment is often where the system gets a little cluttered and unpredictable.
It's a REALLY busy booking site (One of the largest in the world) so time outs and communication errors, plague this part of the booking system. Patience is the key and using the correct so called " payment gateway" For payment with Visa/Mastercard issued outside of India payment gateway 1. is the only gateway you can use. It's run by the bank ICICI, which often leads to confusion as they also run several other payment gateways for Indian cards, these cannot be used by foreign cards, payment gateway 1. is the one you need to use.
American Express has a separate payment gateway.
Be warned this may take several attempts but keep trying you will succeed and sooner rather than later would be best these trains will fill up fast..
Hope that is of some help, feel free to ask about anything that is confusing to you, or indeed come and have a good old rant about the vagaries of the online booking system

Have any one tried AmEx card from abroad. I think it can work on IRCTC.
Tip: If you find communication failure, simply log out and immediately log in. You will be connected to network. Otherwise it may take long time till you get communication get connected.

Hi cyberhippie.
I have tried to book 3 times now but I keep getting this message just before it takes me to the payment screen and I can't get any further.
'Wait Listed ticket reservation is not permitted on your e-ticket .
If you wish to book a waitlisted ticket please replan the same journey for i-ticket'.
Do you know what this means? it won't let me book my ticket!!

Wait listed tickets can not be purchased as e tickets. That means you can not buy the wait listed ticket and take a print out. You need to opt for i ticket. The i ticket can not be printed at your end. A regular ticket will be issued and it will be sent to your address IN INDIA. Most foreign travelers give their hotel address in Indian metro after discussing with the hotel management. The tickets will be delivered to the hotel where the management will hold it for you.
