hi all.
i'm off to India soon to do lots of yoga.
I intend to head to Rishikesh and Mysore for yoga practice.
just wondering what a female should be wearing for yoga class? do I have to cover my shoulders and wear long pants? can I wear a singlet and 3/4 pants?
thanks everyone

Welcome to the Tree, Amber

I can't answer your question as far as yoga attire is concerned, but modest clothing in a holy city such as Rishikesh, is, in my opinion, a must.

Someone is bound to be along shortly to answer your question

Hi Amber

3/4 pants would be ok. You can try a singlet but I would say  a loose t-shirt would be a better option. In Mysore, they segregate the foreigners from the locals and hence you will be practicing yoga with fellow westerners and hence a singlet would be ok. ( I am speaking about BNS Iyenagar and only westerners can afford Pattabhi Jois)

Hope this helps.

Btw, Welcome to the tree.

You can also read a book "Yoga school Drop-Out" by Lucy Edge - there's a story about an English girl who went to India to do a lot of yoga in Mysore, Rishikesh, Madras and other places and the athour's attitude towards  the questions on yoga attire (and many other issues as well) is qiute amusing. Sorry about my English - I wish I could have put it better to L.Edge's advantage.

Also, its not only about how "long" your pants are but also about how tight fitting your clothes are -- especially for women.
