So, we managed to obtain our visas in a very hassle free way. Here is the info in case anyone from the Rhein-Ruhr-Valley needs assistance:

India's main embassy in Germany is in Berlin, you can send in your visa form, passport and 2 photos, the visa will be issued after no more than 2 weeks. The Consulate is in Frankfurt, but I have heard they outsourced the whole visa thing to Cologne.

A few weeks ago I learned that there is a Honorary Consulate in the town of Essen where you can get your visa. They open only on the first Tuesday of the month, office hours starting at 10 am there. Make sure you come at least one hour early as it gets very crowded even in the morning, and then you will draw a number and still have to wait for an hour or so before you can hand in your documents (visa form, passport, 2 photos).

You can download the forms here: http://www.indianemb...clpage=form.htm

You can pick up the visa the same afternoon at 4 pm (again: come early and prepare for frequent delays). It is okay if someone else hands in the documents for you, you don't need to be there in person. You may want to call them, they have a tape playing giving you all the info you need (the info that office hours start at 10:30 am though is wrong, they have probably changed that due to the workload).

Cost for visa: EUR 50
Handling charge: EUR 15

Here's the address of the consulate:

Honorary Consulate of India
Germaniastr. 253
45355 Essen (Essen-Borbeck)

phone: 0201-2699309
fax: 0201-2699375

:D
