Akha was a medieval period poet in Gujarati literature who wrote in the tradition of the Bhakti movement. He kept Gujarati litrature alive and wrote his poem in pattern which is called "chhappa" (satirical poems).

He came to Ahmedabad from Jetalpur in the 17th Century. He was goldsmith by profession. He got inspiration to go towards the way of Bhakti from Saint Gokulnath. He has lived his like in way of Karma, Bhakti and Vairagya and shared his experience and knowledge in chhappa.

One of my favorite Chhappa is:

"Ek Murakhne evi tev, Patthhar atla puje tev
Paani Dekhe kare snan, Tulasi dekhe tode paan
E Akha vadu utpaat, ghana parmeswar e kyani vaat?"

Translation:
"A fool had a habit, worship all the stones (as deities) he sees"
He will bath every time he sees water (all water is holy for him), When he sees Tulasi (Holy plant) he will get leaves
O Akha what a dilemma, lot of Gods does not make sense"

I bet he was (in)famous in his days!

...to add, he probably was the first Gujarati poet to express atheistic tendencies.

Gujarati Language:
Avi nagarma lagi lay,
Pankhine shun dhhokho thai?
Undar bichara kare shor,
jene nahi udvanu jor.
Akhha Gyani Bhavthi kem dare,
Jeni anubhavabh paankh aakshe fare.

Translation:
The great city is on fire
Do the birds care?
Poor rats are creating commotion,
the ones who cannot fly.
"Akha" the knowledgeable one would not be afraid of life,
the one with experienced wings will fly in the sky
(Birds do not care when there is fire down below since it does not affect them, it is only the rats down below who run helter skelter when fire is spotted. People with true knowledge of life will not be affected with evnts and can use their life experiences, knowledge to tackle the events as they come.)

What a great philosophy the great poet had, still could be applied to events of today. Social fabric is on fire all over the world and latest in India, intending to break up the spirit.
