Just finished a great book called "The Chasm of Fire" by a Russian woman called Irina Tweedie who lived in England.
She was a staunch catholic, until the death of her husband around 1960 when she was 50yrs old, she lost faith in her religion & started enquiring into other religions and became a member of the Theosophical Society. Around 1961 she visited the Theosophical Society's headquarters in Adyar near Madras, she intended to stay there & study but suddenly got mysteriously drawn to the Himalayas, she told her friend that she had a strange feeling that she would die once she got there, what she didn't realise at the time was that she was going to die while still living!!! She ends up in Kashmir. A friend had told her to contact another western woman in Srinagar who she thought she would find interesting. She managed to track down the woman in Srinagar, who told her that she was expecting her because she had just received a letter from her Guru saying "You will be visited by a Russian woman when she arrives send her to me".
The Guru was a Hindu Sufi Mystic who lived in Kanpur. She is reluctant to visit him but somehow ends up in Kanpur anyway, where she ends up living for years while the Guru puts her through some very intense teachings/disciplines & makes her give all her money & life savings to the poor. In other words "Total Surrender".
