Had a quick dekho of the tourist toy train that runs between Kalka and Shimla. The coaches are painted bright red, have very big windows almost floor to ceiling and very comfortable seats. Didn't have the time to check the fare and timings.
I have been going to Solan for more than a decade but never travelled by the toy train :)

Dada, my last ride on the Simla Mail in IInd class carriage cost me Rs 20/- and the bill for snacks alone ran much higher then the rail fare.. but that was in year 1993

Gone to Shimla by toy train in 2005. Kept all details about the train journey here. Planning to go again this November.

I travelled by Kalka Simla Super Deluxe which stops only at Barog inbetween. Serves breakfast free of cost. It has got 6 boggies each comprising 20 seats which means there are only 120 seats in that train. Two years back fare was Rs320. It can be booked over net. Big windows and nice view. Starts at 0530am and reaches Simla at 1015 am. Now there are around 10/11 trains between these stations. For deatil click here

If my memory serves me right. they also run a single engine attached to one compartment as a dedicated service on big party assignment. Seats about 18 people and a small pantry attached. halts only at Barog station and reached Simla in about 3 hour 15 mins. (thats almost 3 hour less then the mail train). the small loco chimney is painted in red and white compartment atached from distence looks like a Rooster and called so by many old timers. fares would be almost 3 times the normal
