Efforts are on by the private players to make flying as economical as possible. The general public has got used to the concept of flying for just one rupee (plus the mandatory taxes of another two hundred odd rupees) – offers of this nature have thrown challenges left and right to the railways and, the concept of no-frill airlines is capturing the imagination of the first time fliers. No beauties in the air to bring that cup of tea or coffee or those neatly packed lunch or dinner or breakfast. These have been dispensed with – the traveler pays to fly and that is the only commitment of the low cost airline. There have been instances when the passengers are not extended the luxury of going from the airport lounge to the aircraft on the tarmac by the bus – they have to walk.

The latest in the line of economy measures is the revolutionary concept of plain ordinary airport lounges (minus air conditioning) in sheds beside the runway – the passengers would wait in these enclosures for as long as it takes to complete the basic formalities before boarding the aircraft. There would be a few plastic chairs for the aged, the senior citizens and the sick. There would also be toilets and drinking water facilities. For entertainment, there would be music from suitably located loudspeakers – these could double up as a means of communication with the passengers as well. For example – Mr. So-and-so bound for Chikmagalur – please contact your wife in the reception desk – she says she is not able to locate you in the crowd!

It would be business and only business all the way – similar to traveling by long distance buses; purchase the ticket, wait in queue and leave when your aircraft arrives.

Jet Airways now offers amazingly low fares on its website, with special offers for women travellers and return flight offers. A few clicks on the website and I was able to travel a full service airline at low-cost fares.
