Consulate General of India, New York website says:
"TRANSFER OF VISA TO NEW PASSPORT

Visa holders, whose passport has expired and who have obtained new passports can travel to India with both old and new passports so long as the old passport contains valid visas. They can also transfer the old visa to the new passport."

Has anyone run into any difficulty entering India or traveling with the visa in the expired passport as described above?

I'm facing the same thing now; just sent my passport off for renewal with several years remaining on my 10-yr visa. To make things less complicated, I'll just pay the fee to have the visa transferred to the new passport.

Usually, this is not a problem with any visa.

There could be different rules though. Always make sure with the country's embassy and have them send you an email or fax, just in case.

I've known of Indians travel to the US in similar cases without any problems.

I'll add that the IPO (Indian Passport Office) does not cancel pages with with valid visas when renewing.

What I'm trying to say is that, most visa related issues are usually reciprocative (?) in nature.

You do this to our citizens and we will do the same to you!

Has anyone actually done this - traveled to India with 2 American passports, the expired passport with the valid visa and the new current valid passport without the visa?

Did you run into any difficulties?
