Not sure if any of you will no about this, i didn't until i purchased a book last week called "The Great Hedge Of India" I haven't read it yet, but the jist of it is that in the mid 1800's the Brits built a 14foot high hedge made of spiny Indian plum & thorny acacias that spanned the Indian Subcontinent for a length of 2300 miles (to put this into perspective that's around the same distance as travelling from London to Istanbul). The reason for the Hedge was to create an inland customs barrier enabling the Brits to secure a levy of a duty on salt.
The Hedge extended from the Indus in the North West to the Mahanadi in Madras & was guarded by nearly 12,000 men. Here's more:

I have this one but I'm ashamed to say I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Now I'm inspired to go dig it out.
(I could never buy another book, retire tomorrow, and spend the rest of my life reading only the unread books I already own,and still might not get through all of them.
