Here's an article about the "ghost pepper" of Assam -- it sounds like more than most of us could bear!

Well, I'm obvoiusly a wimp when it comes to chiles -- the first Hindi I learned was "mirchi nay."

That had my eyes watering just reading it!! I love raw Chilli (though not the vicious type like these ghost chillis) even with the long green ones I have a few incidents wherebye my eyes filled with water and lots of lassi was required.
I've now learned to judge the fierceness of said chilli by feeling how hard the chilli is and looking for little black vains on the surface, This denotes HEAT and should be treated with respect!

Canacona Chillis are pretty torrid as well, so much so my wife can't eat ANYTHING when I use them to cook!!

In Bengali we call these Dhani Lanka. Long time back while I was living in northern Spain my host took me for dinner to a fancy place. He asked me whether I would like to try some pickled south American chillies and warned me that these are real hot. I didn't miss the opurtunity to brag & told him that being brought up on Indian chillies these will be nothing. I chewed one and I almost cried out in acute distress.
Lesson: Don't brag.
