And will there be a room available?

I've got an overnight stay at IG Airport in a couple of week's time and as my onward flight to Amritsar is early the next morning it's not really worth the hassle of going all the way into town and back.

Has anyone ever used the retiring rooms?

And is there much chance of me getting my own room? The Rough Guide says they're issued on a first-come first-served basis - as I arrive late at night I'm wondering whether there'll be one available.

I don't really fancy a night in a departure lounge - I've done that far too many times in the past.

"While the large bathroom before passport control looked maintained, special effort appeared to be made to make sure that no trace of toilet paper could be found. After having checked several cabins, I ran into a bathroom attendant who waived before me a stack of US banknotes to show me what it takes to earn the privilege of using the paper. I decided I would rather favor using the banknotes directly rather than enrich that swine."

:(  :(  :(

A room will be preferable to sleeping on the concourse though. I'm keen to avoid the taxi mafia, too. I've had enough of arriving-at-2am-knackered-only-to-be-driven-out-into-the-middle-of-nowhere-and-get-royally-ripped-off, too. Just want some sort of bed for a few hours. I'll catch up on my sleep once I get to Amritsar.

I will add, using Indian banknotes might be cheaper than enriching the attendant.

To add, lesson here is take your own paper!

You can always try Doc but in my experience the rooms are nearly always full. Just outside the perimeter fence of the IGA on NH 8 you have a clutch of small hotels. I found a room here for 600 a night but that was some years back. They're only five minutes from IGA arrivals!

That's worth knowing, ch, thanks for that - I didn't know there were any hotels in the immediate area.

I've got to be back at the domestic terminal for 5am so a trip into town's really not worth it.
