Indian Railways has launched a new safety campaign aimed at preventing fires on trains.

A recent advertisement with the headline, "Do not turn a running train into a burning train",shows a train with fire-crackers, a gas cylinder and a can of kerosene painted on the side of the carriages.

Quote

Remember, while train journey -
  • Do not throw lighted match sticks & cigarette/bidi inside the compartment
  • Do not carry explosive & inflammable goods like fire crackers, gas cylinder. kerosene, petrol, etc
  • Do not light up stove & sigri
  • Carrying inflammable and explosive material is a punishable offence under the Railways Act

Probably a good idea but this has been printed in all carriages for as long as I can remember. In the old days (which I just caught the tail end of) it wasn't at all uncommon, to see the chai wallah or omelet  man squatting in the aisle over a roaring kerosene stove. In a moving train this could well have caused a blaze.

Sheesh!  And all I have to worry about on public transit in SF is people applying their makeup and talking loudly on cell phones!
