I've just started to make my travel plan for September, and would appreciate if anyone could share news on Mangalore-Bangalore passenger train. I heard freight trains had started to run on this line, but I have no information on passenger trains. I read about that railway route in a book written by a Japanese travel writer a few years ago, since then I've been waiting for it to run again.
I've just remembered that I posted this same question on IM last year. But this is another site, so it's not redundant, I think.

Thanks for the link, Shimla! It's in their "Trains to be introduced in the financial year 2005-2006 and beyond" table. I suppose the word "beyond" means the line may or may not be completed in 2005-2006. Looks like I have to wait a little bit more.

Dear Sonomama,
The Mangalore-Hasan BG Section (189 Kms.) which also consists of hilly terrains between Sakleshpur and Subramanya Road, is being used for Freight Traffic. Perhaps, by the end of 2006, it might be opened for the passenger traffic.

Thank you for your information. So I'd better not include that part in my travel plan, which is OK for me because most probably I'll visit India next year, too.
