I shall (finally!) be returning to India Sept. 20th, for a three-week (or so) jaunt, with some people who have a yoga school here in Seattle. First stop, about a week/week & 1/2 in Dharamsala (MacLeod Ganj), then Rishikesh, late Sept.  Then, (October-ish) on to Varanasi for a stay of a week or so; ending up in Delhi for a few days at journey's end. Staying at guest houses/"thrifty" hotels/ashrams. New experience for me! (Last time was in fancy hotels; I'm a real softy, truth be told. Not used to bringing one's own sheet/towel, etc. :ranting:)

Question: will the monsoon have receded from the hills by Sept. 20th or so? (Makes a difference on what I pack, I suppose.) Also, what will Varanasi be like in Oct.? I'm endeavoring to travel as light as possible (not to be clever, though; I'm just extremely lazy).

I'm VERY excited, also about the fact that there'll be some TRAIN travel!! (I love doing this in India - haven't done this since the 60's with my Mum & Dad.)

Cheers,
Bruce

p.s. I'm also going back for a Rajasthan visit in Oct. '08 with some friends, then (possibly) another N. India trip in '09 with my siblings! Embarrassment of riches in my life at the moment.

I was in Varanasi in October 3 years ago and the weather was definitely still warm-to-hot but not scorching.  I was also in Dharamasala (and elsewhere) around the same time and the weather was very pleasant.  Warm but not stinking hot.

Although it was pretty much post-monsoon, I did hit rain on the way to Kolkata - in fact enough to cause extensive flooding -- but everybody said that was unusual for that time of year.  I got some rain in Sikkim, too, but just one night and not of monsoon proportions.  But you aren't planning to be in these areas, so typical or not, this experience isn't really relevant.

I think October is a very good time to be where you're planning to travel.
