My elderly parents are planning a trip to N. India in October 2007.

One of the travel companies says bring woollens since it is cold in N. India from Oct. to March.

A couple of questions:
  • How cold does if get?
  • When do the monsoons finish?
Thank you!

How far north are we talking about here. That's a pretty sweeping statement about the North outside of December and January where it can get quite cold in the evening and even through the day at times, the rest of the months quoted by the travel Agents will have only the occasional cool evening possibly getting cold in the wee hours of the morning when your in bed. So an extra blanket may be a good idea which any hotel will surely provide.
I'm sure October won't provide many cold days but perhaps something warm to put on in the evenings if they're out enjoying a meal or whatever. The mnosson should have receded by this time!

Thanks CH.

My father is over 80 and my mother isn't far behind, so they won't be trekking in the Himalayas!  ;)

I think what they have in mind is to do the Golden Triangle before going back to Ooty.

Around the Golden traingle circuit October & November is very pleasant weather. As residents of UK the slight chill of the November nights won't bother them I think. but December onwards it gets quite cold, woolens will be required. In Delhi the minimum can fall down to 6 and max about 18 deg.

I'll be in MacLeod Ganj/Rishikesh area in late Sept./early Oct. or so, and was just planning on taking a light jacket or sweater for the nights. Am I on the right track, or seriously unprepared?

Cheers,
Bruce

Lawrence, for the area you plan to be in a light jacket or sweater should be more than adequate.

But for John's parents, keep in mind that it actually snows in places like Shimla and Mussoorie in the winter!  But where in particular are they going to be?
