This tip was supplied by our friendly taxi driver in Manali.

For taxi hire between two cities, always look for returning taxis. Since, they will be returning to their originating city empty, they will give discount. A local travel agent has pretty good idea for about any availability. Taxi driver network can also be a good source.

Recently from Manali to Shimla, we got a returning taxi for 1600, the regular price quoted from travel agents was 2400 untill we specifically asked for a returning taxi (may not always be available though).

My friends in Gangtok gave me the same tip: when hiring a taxi at the airport in Bagdogra, look for one with Sikkim plates, not West Bengal plates!
