I spent  three days in Hyderabad. First night I met with bigzero & a few more and ate at the outdoor restaurant of the Yatri Niwas. Very good setting, under huge green trees. The food was ok although the Chicken65 they served was more Chicken manchurian(actually no such cuisine called manchurian actually exists, another story another time errr post) than the crispy thing that it is supposed to be.
Next evening went to 'Jewel of Nizam" at Golconda hotel. Nice ambience, cosy seating, live semi classical music. For dessert we had Khubani ka meetha(stewed apricots & cream). The food was typically Hyderabadi muslim style. The mutton fry was very good. A bit pricey but an enjoyable evening out.
For lunch went to Mainland China. Their buffet is excellent value for money. For Rs.270 you get a glass of beer and eat from a lavish spread. We hogged on prawns & soft shelled crabs. Living in Delhi fresh seafood was irrestible for us so polished off the prawns & crabs.
The same night went to Rayalaseema Ruchulu, a traditional eatery serving delicacies from a part of Andhra known for spicy food. The goat head curry & the country chicken curry was damn good so was the spicy steaks of Surmai fish fried.

This goat head curry you speak of has been worrying me for quite a while.  How is it served?  Is the head baked, or would you not know you're eating a goat's head, i.e. is it broken down into pieces?  An odd question, I know - I just need to picture it  in my mind's eye.

I suppose as long as it was enjoyable, that's the important thing. :whistling: Bon appetite ;)

Ah! Rayalaseema Ruchulu, I envy you Jyoti da. Was on my 'Most Frequented' list last year when I was there. Their biryani is good too, I think they call it 'palau'.

Jewel Of Nizam is good too. Did they have biryani on the buffet?

If you go during the month of Ramzan (make an effort to go :whistling:  ) , all of Hyderabad is Haleem paradise. I'm not a muslim but I used to have it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Even going from one corner of the city to other sampling various stalls/restaurants.

You should also try Mirchi Ka Salan and Baghare Baingan with biryani next when you are in HYD.

I went to Rayalaseema Ruchulu on your advice Hyderabadi and so thank you so much. We purposely didn't order Biriyani at the Jewels and went for other things. I have taken note of Ramazan feast & I will be there for the Haleem, hope the gang of Hyderabad will join.

Haleem goes fishy
Thursday September 20 2007
Express Features

HOW innovative can you get with a delicacy? If you ask the Hyderabadis who are known to be food lovers, the answer is bound to be something like ‘there are lots of possibilities’. When it was thought preposterous to imagine the nutritious and irresistible Ramzan delicacy haleem in its vegetarian avatar, a popular haleem seller introduced veg haleem a couple of years ago, which, not surprisingly, turned out to be a hit with the veggies of the twin cities.

And now, after mutton and chicken varieties of haleem, Mohammed Arifuddin and Muneeruddin - proprietors of the recently launched eating joint Mannosalwa Sea Food at Tolichowki - have come up with fish haleem.

“We thought when chicken haleem could be made, why not fish haleem,” says Arifuddin, speaking to City Express on Wednesday. “Thanks to our chef Ustad Waheed Khan, who is the disciple of the late Bade Pashu, we’ve been able to launch fish haleem this Ramzan.”

According to Arifuddin, murrel fish is being used in the fish haleem to ensure a boneless delicacy. “We are using the same ingredients as in the case of other varieties of haleem - wheat flour (rava), pure ghee, dry fruits and special masalas. The only difference is that while the ratio of the wheat flour and mutton/ chicken is 1:4, we are using a kilogram of wheat flour for two kilograms of fish.

That is why we have fixed the price of a plate of fish haleem at Rs 60,” he informs.

The lunch buffet at Taj Banjara floored me.
For Rs.1000/- a huge buffet spread with unlimited wine and other beverages it was a steal!!!! Or rather a loot.
Started off with a glass of cold Australian white and very fresh green Mussels, Clams and Oyesters, moved on to a great salad with very fresh greens and prawns. But what did me in was the succulent lamb chops fried fresh and brought to the table along with a robust red....
In spite of the big climb of Golconda fort and a few rums later in the night didn't feel like going for a spicey dinner so instead went to Fusion9 and had an excellent Pizza followed by a good cup of coffee at the Art Cafe right below.
Today is another quest!!!
