My friend's father was born in and lives in India.

She has lost contact with her father and needs a copy of his birth and marriage certificates so that she can apply for a PIO Card.

Can anyone tell me where official copies of the documents can be had?

oh boy. getting such docs is never easy here. and unfortunately it might require greasing the wheel at various stages.

i can suggest getting hold of a local lawyer (city, town where she was born) to start with.

without a lawyer or a tout, you might get stuck in beaurocratic maze of a municipality office. lot of these forms are also in local languages..(no english)..

might also want to check with yourmaninindia.com if they might help.

First place is, the Births and deaths registrar in the local place where he was born. That is, assuming he got his birth registered. Failing which, the next is the person's ration card and school certificates from the school where he studied. Again, some documentation must exist somewhere that he actually was in the place where he claimed to be.

No offense in the way it's worded above but that's how they'd go about asking you. If only part of the paperwork is there, I'm not sure what the procedure is. i.e. only the school certificate but there is no official birth registration.

i checked with my dad. he says for that generation...i am assuming here that the father is an older father in his 60's ?, school certificates would provide the birth details. but again this varies by regions, states.

as far as marriage certificates, there was none. my dad doesnt have any and at his time, they neednt to register.. the ration card might have it...it says the relationship.

he says is to get affidavits signed by the district magistrate...or the local magistrate.

its better to consult a local lawyer for advise.

Thanks Bhupesh,

Welcome to the India Tree and thanks for the link - It certainly looks like a good resource for the NRI/PIO!

Hello..

BEWARE OF YOURMANININDIA. They are not reliable.

First they will charge a nominal fee for their services. Then they will increase the charge to a huge amount citing all kinds of reasons.

Finally they don't deliver the services and will charge a huge conveniance fee.

You can't dispute the charges as its a Service and Paypal, Amex and Visa don't cover non-tangible services fee...

BEWARE OF YOURMANININDIA. Sahara is better.
